Tuition Assistance

Federal Tuition Assistance

Military Tuition Assistance is a benefit paid to eligible members of each military service. Each service has its own criteria for eligibility, application process, and restrictions. Please use the links below to find out more information on the specifics for receiving tuition assistance from your military service.

For more information about specific branches of the military, please visit the appropriate military web site.

The Office of Veterans Services is here to assist you with your military education benefits. Please feel free to reach out to us at veterans@pitt.edu or 412-624-3213 for assistance in navigating your tuition assistance benefits. Typically, you will have to work through your military education advisor to apply for tuition assistance benefits. Below is a list of instructional guides to assist you in applying for your TA benefits.

The University of Pittsburgh refrains from providing any commission, bonus, or other incentive payment based directly or indirectly on securing enrollments or federal financial aid, including Tuition Assistance funds, to any persons or entities engaged in any student recruiting, admission activities, or making decisions regarding the award and distribution of student financial assistance.

The University of Pittsburgh refrains from high-pressure recruitment tactics, such as making multiple unsolicited contacts (three or more), including contacts by phone, email, or in-person, and also in engaging in same-day recruitment and registration for the purpose of securing military enrollments.

DoD personnel are entitled to consideration for all forms of financial aid that the University makes available to students at their home campuses.  The University of Pittsburgh Office of Admission and Financial Aid will provide information and application processes for Title IV student aid programs, scholarships, fellowships, grants and loans to DoD Tuition Assistance (TA) recipients.  Service members identified as eligible DoD TA recipients will have their TA benefits applied to their account prior to the application of their Pell Grant funds to their account.

If an eligible Service member decides to use Tuition Assistance (TA), the University of Pittsburgh will enroll the student only after the TA is approved by the individual's service.

Benefits:

Military tuition assistance (TA) is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.  Congress has given each service the ability to pay up to 100% for the tuition expenses of its members.  Each service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application process and restrictions.  These funds are generally paid directly to the university by the individual service.  TA is not a loan – it should be viewed as funding that you have earned.

Process:

It is recommended that you apply for TA at least four weeks prior to the beginning of coursework.

Contact your Education Services Officer (ESO) for a briefing on TA, then:

  1. Apply for admission to the University of Pittsburgh and print your degree plan.
  2. Register for courses. All branches require registration prior to approval.
  3. Log into your branch education portal and follow their process for enrolling and requesting TA.

Branch Portals:

Each branch of service has a specific TA process.  Please select your branch portal below for the most up-to-date information.
