Undergraduate Admissions

We evaluate each prospective veteran student’s application holistically, reviewing their past academic career as well as their personal and professional achievements. Nontraditional students, including veterans, are not required to submit SAT scores. The review process considers the following factors:

  • Demonstrated leadership or success in military operations
  • Significant leadership experience, such as military service
  • Letters of recommendation from commanders or supervisors
  • Personal essays detailing personal goals and achievements
  • Grade trends and grade point average
  • Number of transfer credits previously completed
  • Difficulty of curriculum
  • Intended field of study
  • Coursework relevant to their school and/or major
  • Type(s) of institution(s) previously attended

How to Apply

All the steps you need to follow regarding undergraduate admission to the University can be found on the Veterans page of the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. www.oafa.pitt.edu/veterans.aspx

Regional Campuses

Prospective students interested in attending programs at Pitt regional campuses should contact those campuses directly. www.pitt.edu/campuses.html

Application Fee Waiver

Pitt waives the application fee for veterans. Just enter the code "VETR" in the fee waiver box under your name on the online application or attach a note to the printed application with the code on it.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams are designed to measure what you have learned through informal study, reading, travel, and work, and then equate this knowledge with what students usually learn during the first year of college study.  When you earn credits through CLEP exams, you can move directly to more advanced classes.  This helps you complete your college education more quickly and at a lower overall cost.

For more information on the CLEP acceptance policy for the College of General Studies and for information on testing sites, click here.  For information about the acceptance policy of additional schools within the University of Pittsburgh, click here.  If you do not see your school of interest listed, please contact them directly for their CLEP acceptance policy.

Graduate Admissions

If you are interested in applying to one of the University’s graduate programs, please contact each school directly for information regarding its admissions policies. Review the directory of the University’s graduate schools.

Compulsory Service Policies

The University recognizes that recent veterans, those still finishing their active military service, or current servicepersons called up for duty may face particular challenges with admissions, enrollment, or withdrawing from the University. Pitt is committed to making these processes as accessible and as simple as possible for you.

Defer Your Application or Enrollment

We know that prospective students who are active military personnel or who are transitioning to veteran status may not be able to anticipate precisely when they will be able to enroll in college. Should you apply for undergraduate admission, the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid can help you with these concerns. For example, should you need to delay your term of enrollment you can easily submit an e-mail request delaying your enrollment for a following semester. The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid will work with you to figure out a plan that works best for you. Contact:

Military Call Up

We will do whatever is required to enable students called up to active military duty to transition out of the University as expeditiously as possible. If you are called up to active duty, you'll need to provide a copy of your deployment order to Dee Kreiling, Coordinator of Veterans Services. In addition, we will arrange for you to drop the term’s registration so you will owe no tuition for the term and receive no grades. In rare cases, there will be exceptions to this, depending on personal and/or financial reasons. Before making any final decisions we will be happy to talk and work with you to help you make the best decision based on your situation.  Please contact:
